The Father -argument

Every once in a while I run into an argument, that goes something like follows:

“Surely God, who is our loving father, would not do something like this or that to his children.”

There is a right and wrong way to use this argument. The wrong way is often presented in the context of judgment, whether or not God will judge people to (eternal) hell, or let them in heaven.
